Look at that, the year is over!

First of all, I know I haven’t been updating in any meaningful way for a month or so, but maybe you know how the month of December is. The month of December is busy, so I was busy.

Enough about that! Here’s what I want to talk about: how great all the people of the internet have been to me/this site this year. Here, let me thank some of them:

KOTAKU and io9

These two supermassive sites both featured work that I did....twice. Each time they did so a massive amount of people were exposed to my work, and lots of them even said nice things about it. It was nuts that I was on those websites.

Justin Rampage

Justin is a main guy of tumblr (and also the rest of the internet, whether they know it or not), as far as people who enjoy awesome art are concerned. Mr. Rampage is likely responsible for the bulk of my tumblr followers as a result of reblogging/featuring posts of mine more frequently than I would ever expect, but more importantly his site is often the first place I’m exposed to the fantastic work of a number of awesome designers/artists/nerds.

Gamefreaks

Another tumblr mainstay, the editors at Gamefreaks were wonderful enough to feature my work on their heavily-followed page. What’s more, they provide Actual News About Videogames to me, which is an important service that I appreciate very much.

Etsy

Throughout 2011 the folks running the scene over at Etsy (what’s up, DeMarko) made a number of HUGE improvements to the site (sorting search results by relevance, awesome statistics/analytics information, more complicated computer stuff I can’t sum up in 3 words) and very clearly worked their asses off to improve an already-excellent marketplace, which absolutely contributed to the enormous rise in the number of generous, supportive, enthusiastic Etsy users who actually purchased things I made. I like my real job (working in a library) but there were months this year that I paid my rent using money I made drawing robots on the internet. That’s Etsy, you guys - a website that isn’t just posters telling you to keep calm and moustache moustache.

RedBubble

RedBubble made it tremendously easy to put my designs on shirts, show those shirts to people on the internet, and facilitate the creation and distribution of shirts to people who wanted to wear them on their bodies. Also they’re from Australia.

(Almost) 3 years ago, back on OCTOBER 22ND, 2008 I started up the Daily Robot. Apparently I opened the Etsy store on the same day, but I have no recollection doing this, and also I didn’t sell anything to anyone until like, ever.

Well, here we are. I’m still drawing robots, and more people than ever are looking at them, which I appreciate more than you can probably guess. Additionally, this little art project went from being a hobby to a kind of second job for me, (in the good way).

In honor of the Daily Robot’s third birthday I’ve made this, a big (18”x24”) limited-edition poster that I spent a lot of time on, and that, as so rarely happens, turned out exactly how I imagined it before I started. I hope you like it too. I’m selling them at Etsy, and there will only be 20 of them. Also, each one is going to come with a special one-of-a-kind robot drawing, a little Daily Robot Birthday present to anyone who orders one.

I have a few more anniversarial surprises in store that you’ll hear about over the next couple days, but for right now I’d like to thank anyone reading this for being a part of The Daily Robot!

Last Thursday I had to attend a conference about integrating media into the undergraduate curriculum and also blahblahblah, wherein a bunch of people in their 40’s and 50’s tried to explain how iMovie 06 is great and kids these days use Macs and how about that youtube? These were the only notes I took.

Back in July I was contacted by a Design Human named Melissa. She'd been hired by Disqus, a Company From the Internet to make their new offices look awesome, and she said she wanted to use a number of my pieces to help do so (along with, I imagine, lots of stuff from people way cooler than I am). Anyway, she asked for a bunch of prints like these (and these, and these), more than any individual had ever purchased from me. I was very excited that 1) someone wanted to buy stuff from me and 2) my stuff would be hanging in an office somewhere - one of those hip-ass offices that Companies on the Internet always have.

Anyway, yesterday Melissa contacted me to let me know that photographs of The Space were available to look at on the internet, so what you see above is actually part of Disqus's office, which I think is pretty fantastic. Click here to see more photos!

What's up America, I've been away for awhile. Right now I'm in Oklahoma, near to where I used to live. This is a robot cowboy, but not like the one from Westworld. Also there aren't any robot cowboys in Oklahoma to my knowledge, but some people do wear cowboy hats, especially at the State Fair, which I went to. Where I ate this.

I made the first of them - Air Man, while sitting on a couch in a living room in Los Angeles. I finished the last of these on Wednesday - Flash Man, pictured below. Because Mega Man Legends 3 has been Cancelled and I am ~~pretty~~ Really disappointed about it.
Because THIS PAINTING which is NOT CANCELLED and CONTINUES TO EXIST is being DONATED to MEGA MAN FOR HEALING to be used as a raffle prize or auction item (or however the organizer of said CHARITABLE EFFORT sees fit).

Fun Fact: As far as Design Ability is concerned, one area where I feel the least confident is color selection. Like, tell me to pick 4 and I will, but I'll choose wrong. Hello, it has been some time.

To anyone who spent the last two weeks refreshing this page hoping for something to appear: I am sorry for the relentless dead air that this space has been. To anyone who found their way here as a result of meeting me at the Happy Go Techy Expo: hello, and also sorry for not updating this page once in the entire time you've known about it. To everyone else: hey.

So what's going on? Not a lot, robotwise. I've barely picked up a pen or opened Illustrator in the last two weeks, which you'd think would mean that I'm just brimming with creative energy, but mostly just means that I feel lousy about being so unproductive. I had nice time while away from home though, despite er...underwhelming response from the vast majority of Expo Attendees.

Here's a painting of Robocop I did with acrylic and India ink. I remember, when I was a little kid, my older brother would play the original Robocop games for the NES. You guys, it is nuts that they used to make videogames targeted to children that were adaptations of R-rated movies. When I say "nuts" I mean "awesome."

If you're the sort who follows my various robot-related internet presences you may have seen this in-progress picture of something I'm (still) working on. It's the robot Atlas from [A Popular, Recently-Released video game]. I was, however, having a lot of trouble illustrating him digitally. I had a ton of reference images, but I still couldn't get him to fit together properly. I decided, in order to get more comfortable with how this (excellently designed, super awesome looking) robot fit together, I'd paint him and his gangly counterpart P-Body. So, here's how Atlas turned out. I'll post the P-Body painting tomorrow, but if you're desperate to see how he looks as well you can check them out at my Etsy and purchase these guys as a framed set (complete with hand-painted matting that I am extremely proud of).

DID YOU KNOW that this will be one of the only times in the history of the universe that I will WILLINGLY be at a location where people I DON'T EVEN KNOW are encouraged to come up to me and start CONVERSATIONS? It is UNPRECEDENTED.

This is a quick update to let you know that these star wars posters that you’re all dead sick of hearing about will continue to be only $10 for a little while longer. I sort of need to make some sales, because it looks like I am about to be unemployed for a month or so (I work at a university library, and my job is an Academic Year position, which means that when the school year runs out - next week - I’m also out).

That's part of it, there is additional, more exciting (personally) news that I will share when I have done a good job writing about it. It's not that exciting. It's just kind of cool. Let's just call it 'sort of cool news' so we don't get sued by some website.

Yeah yeah, everyone thinks Boba Fett's the coolest bounty hunter, but that's because they forgot about IG-88. Boba Fett has a cool space ship, but he also has to tolerate Dengar's sorry ass when those two teamed up, Abbot and Costello style. IG-88 was tight as hell and there were 4 of it. Also, it hacked the second Death Star, which has to be worth something.

Anyway, this is just some vector work - I don't know what I'll do with it, but ultimately I'd like to make a print featuring the toughest robot from Star Wars.

So I was at the Penny Arcade Expo (East Coast Edition) all weekend, which is why you did not hear from me, and also why my feet feel like they have been hit with hammers repeatedly. While there I stopped by a booth for a game concerned only with shooting robots, but they also wanted people to design robots. So I drew one.

I spent most of my time at the chiptune shows though, because guess who was not about to wait in line for anything.

Mega Man X Buster Schematic Prints!

I'm really happy with how these turned out, because while I liked the aged paper distressed look of the Mega Man Classic prints, these are super colorful, and I spent more time on the details of the exteriors as well. They're kind of like jumping from 8 bits to 16, I guess.
